    Professor Katalin Farkas, Head of the Department of Philosophy, has been appointed Provost and Academic Pro-rector, effective August 1, 2010.

    Professor Farkas brings strong academic credentials and a renowned international academic reputation, leadership skills as head of her department, and administrative experience as an active participant on univerisity committees, as well as a background in non-policy areas of CEU that will be valuable for the whole University at a time of focus on policy studies. In accepting her appointment Professor Farkas said: "It's an honor to be nominated for this position, and I'd like to thank the Senate and the Rector for putting their trust in me. I will do my best to deserve this trust." Her appointment follows the succesful tenure of Professor Howard Robinson, who has held the post since September 2007.

    On May 19, Professor Katalin Szende was elected Head of Department for the coming two academic years, 2010/11 and 2011/12. Her term of office will commence this September.

    Professor Szende, who has been a faculty member of the Department of Medieval Studies for more than ten years, is a specialist of medieval and early modern urban history. She is member of the International Commission for the History of Towns and has recently received a highly prestigious OTKA grant for a group project on the Hungarian Atlas of Historic Towns. She will direct a CEU summer university course on “Lived Space in Past and Present: Challenges in the research and management of townscape and cultural heritage” this June.

    Professor Aleh Cherp has been appointed Academic Secretary and Research Director, effective May 1, 2010. 

    Professor Cherp will continue his research and teaching at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy and as the Coordinator of the MESPOM Consortium.
